Eurozone Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Eurozone - Essay Example 249-256, 2010). Denmark, Sweden, and United Kingdom are the countries, which are a part of the European Union, but they are not a part of Eurozone. The rest of the seven countries will join the Eurozone after fulfilling the requirements. Eurozone came into being on January 1, 1999 with eleven members, which met the criteria. Exactly after two years Greece also joined the Eurozone and today the country is facing huge financial and economic troubles (Sladek, pp. 12, 2010). This would be discussed later in the paper. However, the major objective of the paper is to discuss that why Britain should not join the Eurozone especially considering the recent economic disaster in Greece. Discussion Ever since this debate started, the public opinion in the United Kingdom has been against the adoption of Euro. In the polls of 2005, 57 percent of the people opposed, in 2008, the percentage increased to 59 and in the year 2009, the percentage of people against the euro increased to 68 percent (Lynn, pp. 249-256, 2010).... ld minimize the shocks of the recession, it lowered its interest rates to record low level of 0.5 percent so that investments could be encouraged in the country (Pelagidis & Mitsopoulos, pp. 377, 2011). Furthermore, the devaluation of pound in the international arena in the recent past is exactly what the country needed to boost its economy since it helped the economy to boost its exports. If UK joins the Eurozone then it will lose all hope to make any gains on the possible depreciation of Euro since more than 60 percent of UK’s trade would be taking place with Eurozone countries (Farkas & Murphy, pp. 58-59, 2011). Furthermore, the housing market of UK is such that it responds very quickly to the interest rates since they have high variable mortgages. Therefore, small fluctuations on the interest rate may mean huge effects on the consumer spending and their disposable incomes (Alesina & Giavazzi, pp. 85-89, 2010). Through IMF, UK will contribute almost 1 billion pounds to bail out package of Greece. This figure would have been more than double if Prime Minister David Cameron had not interfered in the process. More importantly, this figure would have even greater if Britain would have been a member of Eurozone. Furthermore, in the wake of the recent events where billions of dollars have been provided to the corrupt and irresponsible Greece government for bailout, there remains no room for second thoughts on the idea that UK should never join the Eurozone. The current crisis in Greece, which is quickly pushing their government to default and the subsequent bailout packages for Portugal, Ireland, and Italy mean that the Euro would lose its value in the international markets and it, is highly likely that investors may also lose their faith in the currency (Pelagidis &

Country Lovers Essay Example for Free

Country Lovers Essay The narrative elements of literature are crucial when writing a story as they are what raises the story above being a line of strung together sentences and give the story meaning. It is especially important to have a clear idea of these elements when wring short stories because, unlike novels, the writer is only given a small amount of space to get his/her point across. By reading literature and searching for these narrative elements one can get a true feeling for their importance to the story and improve their own writing. Recently I have had the pleasure of reading the short story â€Å"Country Lovers†, by Nadine Gordimer and in this paper I will explain how she used the narrative elements of plot, theme and point of view to enhance her story and make it a richer experience. The story â€Å"Country Lovers† written by Nadine Gordimer is a story about love and race. This story starts with a childhood love and grows into adulthood. â€Å"Country Lovers† is a story that deals with a forbidden love between a black woman named Thebedi and a white man whose name is Paulus. Thebedi gets pregnant by Paulus which is not allowed in the 1900’s and Paulus did not know about this pregnancy. Thebedi decides to get married after Paulus leaves for collage and the man she marries accepts the child as his own. After Paulus returns and finds out about the pregnancy the child mysteriously dies. In W. R. Clugston’s book, The Journey Into Literature he defines plot as â€Å"a dynamic element in fiction, a sequence of interrelated, conflicting actions and events that typically build to a climax and bring about a resolution† (Clugston, 2010, p. 5. 1). This is a story of a romance between a white man and a black woman who discover their love is restricted by the law, which is troublesome for them both because they love each other deeply and in the end this restriction ends in tragedy. In W. R. Clugston’s book, The Journey Into Literature, he also describes how to identify the theme in a story: â€Å"To identify a storys theme its necessary to look beyond the plot. The plot tells you what happens in a story, but the theme tells you what the story is about† (Clugston, 2010, p. 7. 1). The theme of the story helps the story evolve and come to life. The theme of this particular story is love and race and as I pointed out earlier the race part of the theme is a white man falls in love with a black woman. Even though there is so much going on in this the overall theme to this story is love, specifically a forbidden love. Now let talk about the point of view of the story â€Å"Country Lovers†. Cluston defines point of view as, â€Å"Point of view refers to who tells the story—how the action is presented to the reader. When you read a story, you are sensing everything in it through the eyes of the narrator. Its important to remember that the narrator, whether a character inside the story or one looking on from outside the action, is a voice invented by the author for the purposes of the story† (Clugston, 2010, p. 5. 1). The point of view in this story is third–person omniscient. This means that the narrator is not a character in the story and we are reading the story from the narrator’s and not the character’s view. The omniscient part of the point of view is the narrator is helping us to experience the feelings of the characters. Point of view has so much impact on the story because it gives us the feeling of the story. The article â€Å"Country Lovers† explains why the third person narrative is essential to this story: â€Å"It [†¦] used third person because then we get a neutral point of the story, and we don’t natural[y] take side[s] with one of them†( Country Lovers, 2012,). If someone writes a story in a first person you are getting everything from the character s point of view and a person reads what they see, feel, and hear. This will change the story dramatically because people don’t know if what they see is real or not. It is the character who makes people feels the way someone does. As for third person the narrator tells us what is really going on in the story. People know what the truth is and what is not. When someone gets to read a story in third person they get the whole perspective. All of the literary elements help a story come together. If someone does not have all the parts of the story such as plot, theme, tone and point of view then the story will be lacking. The plot of the story lays everything out what is going to happen, the theme of the story tells you what kind of story it is going to be, the tone determines how the story will be told (Clugston, 2010, p. 5. 3), and the point of view can change everything. These elements are all critical in turning words on a page into literature and if you take even one piece away even the great works of history would be reduced to nothing. I. B. singer said it best when he said, â€Å"A story to me means a plot where there is some surprise. Because that is how life is full of surprises† (Singer, 2001).

Graduation Speech -- Graduation Speech, Commencement Address

When we arrived at Douthitt High School as freshmen, the buildings in our school showed the signs of their 40 years of age. It might be hard to think back to that time when there was a landscaped yard in front of the cafeteria instead of a concrete courtyard, and when the grassy knoll our students enjoy on a rare sunny day didn't exist. After a few noisy years of construction, we now have a modern school. In our time here, it has gone through a complete change from old and mature, to fresh and new. We, on the other hand, have gone from being fresh and new high school students, to old, experienced, mature young adults ready to graduate. We've had many great people build us up to what we are. First and foremost, we should thank our parents for their example, wisdom and support. And although they may pretend to be sad that our high school years are over and that many of us will be going off to live on our own for the first time, don't worry. They're already secretly plotting how to redecorate our rooms. Of course, we've had many inspirational and influential teachers touch us, too. From our days of Info Tech and Freshman English to Government and Washington State, our teachers have been there for us, to lead us toward knowledge. We've had teachers who have pushed us to our academic limits with their rigorous curriculums, teachers who made us laugh every day, and teachers who have shown us support and dedication. We've sat in class as drool formed at the corners of our mouths, either because of a jaw-dropping lecture or a sleep-inducing video, but either way, we will greatly benefit from the things we've learned here. We won't forget the events that shaped our high school experience, either. We've rooted on sports teams at sta... ...o experiencing only peaks! I want my life to be one never ending ascension!" He then proceeds to crash his wagon off a high cliff. Of course, valleys and lowlands are unavoidable. Frustration and failures may come and go, but we can always know we are ascending a peak, if we are striving for love and service in life, treating people with kindness and respect. We can be the wise gurus who sit atop a mountain, inspiring others with our actions. There is no limit to what we can accomplish if we use the tools we have acquired in our time at Douthitt. We are mature from our time at this school, but we are also fresh and full of energy, like our school buildings and the people who wander them. In life, we will face many challenges, but if we remember the basics we will ultimately prevail, find success , and leave the world a bit better than when we started. Thank you.

Utopia: Not Possible

If one were to ask 100 different people a subjective question, one is likely to elicit 100 different answers. This shows that everyone is different and has a wide range of views. Knowing this, one can assume that each one of their views on utopia must be equally as varied. Therefore, achieving a common utopia is near impossible. A utopia is a perfect place where everyone is happy both in society and in oneself. Motivation; an element of life that gives someone the drive to achieve a certain goal. Motivation is the adrenaline rush to life without which humans cannot progress as a civilization. It allows for the betterment of society, thus gaining some common ground between people which although does not constitute a utopia, will make a majority of people happy. Achieving utopia in society is impossible, but by using utopia as a goal or as a motivation, society will grow into a happier and more utopian like place, even though it can not reach actual utopia. A society similar to a utopia is possible through America’s motivation, and due to this, we have fruitful land, both agriculturally and socially.Ignorance, the opposite of motivation, leads to a dystopia, a place or environment in which people are miserable, unhappy or uncomfortable in, instead of a utopian-like society. This shows us that ignorance will not make society happy, thus deviating from the track to societal transcendence; the metamorphosis of society into a state of well-being. Due to each person having unique wants and necessities, the scope of a utopian society, is broadened and stretched until it can no longer be perceived. This adds to the number of reasons why utopia is not possible.Motivation is quintessential to attain near utopianism; a society that takes into account everybodys general view of utopia. Without motivation, society would suffer a dystopian lifestyle. Dreamers and visionaries alike possess the fire needed for success. This fire is known to us as motivation. An essential driving force in the creation of America, motivation at it’s finest can be seen in many instances. David Brooks, a New York Times writer, shows us that America is one of the hardest working countries on this planet.â€Å"The average American works 350 hours a year — nearly 10 weeks — more than the average Western European. † (Brooks 2004). One-upping the rest of the countries, America harvests some of the hardest workers. This hard work pays off in the long run because according to Christopher Matthews, â€Å"[America] leads the world in labor productivity. † (Matthews 1). This hard work translates into society’s progress through time. The American Dream is the dream of being able to make a successful living out of nothing. This dream prevailed in both the recent and earlier years. For example, the dispersal of America. Attracted to the city life, Americans saturated many of the popular cities in America, like Pittsburgh, for example. Althoug h this is true, over time we see a dispersal. â€Å"†¦ population of metropolitan Pittsburgh has declined by 8 percent since 1980†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Brooks 2004). This expansion resulted from the drive to explore and conquer. After quenching this thirst, Americans have seen that they are much happier in the suburbs and exurbs, shown in their productivity. These families are happy because of their success. This success is a direct result of motivated minds, minds that surpass odds which pose as threats, minds that feed off of the burning fire which incites progress, minds that envision utopia. Minds that simply do not care and are ignorant to societal problems achieve, rather, receive dystopia as opposed to utopia. Ignorance; that lack of knowledge or information. Those who are oblivious to problem solving and believe that ignoring all that is bad are considered ignorant. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Lenina Crowne visited a Savage Reservation, which was a place for Nati ve Americans that were not â€Å"civilized. † They led normal lives, but Lenina was disgusted by it because she had no previous understanding of the world before their god like idol Henry Ford â€Å"civilized† the place. He implemented a factory line way of doing things such as conceiving babies, the term parent was alien to them. She begged for her soma which was a drug that releases stress from the consumer and makes the consumer forget about all their problems. This is ironic because the accused savages that stay on the savage reservation are not actually savage, it is in fact the â€Å"civilized† people of the World Sate (their home). They rely on drugs and ignorance to be happy. â€Å"A gramme is better than a damn. † (Huxley 89). She explicitly shows how she would much rather take drugs than face her problems. Hiding the problems instead of solving them creates a dystopia in which ignorance is key. Their soma driven society knows no problems, because stability was given in exchange for individualism.Instead of self-understanding, the humans of the World State are organized under a caste system ranging from the Alphas (highest) to the Epsilons (lowest). They rarely know solitude, but in those rare occurrences, soma quickly fills it with dreams and ignorance. Huxley satirizes utopia as a goal that is out of one’s reach by showing how ignorance and â€Å"fake† happiness is ephemeral and does not solve any real problems. George Orwell, a former student of Aldous Huxley and now famous writer, in the book 1984, mentions the Party slogan; â€Å"†¦War is peace[,] Freedom is slavery[,] Ignorance is strength. † (Huxley 26). The people of Oceania are brainwashed to believe that war is peace, freedom is slavery, and the most shocking, ignorance is strength. Ridiculing society’s problem of blind trust, Orwell shows the reader that ignorance leads to a more Orwellian society than societal strength. There is a dearth of sleep, food, creation of ideas, procreation, and yet society ignores this and continues to believe that there is in fact an abundance of sleep, food, et cetera.Due to the society being more dystopian, we can attribute ignorance to a major role in the creation of such a dark place. David Brooks quotes a philosopher named George Santayana; â€Å"†¦ Americans doesn’t solve problems; we just leave them behind. † (Brooks 2004). Mr. Santayana is saying that Americans are ignorant and cretinous in our knowledge of the world. Not having any worldly information can lead to a withdrawal from society, removing from society’s pool of ideas, knowledge, and people that push for near-utopianism.This leads to a lack of problem solving and degradation of a society at large. A society is composed of people, people each with their own taste and outlook on everything because according to science, no two are the same. Uniquity is prevalent which means that everyones needs and wants are widely dispersed. The common ground between people is limited. â€Å" Bathroom tile is their cocaine: instead of white powder, the blow their life savings on handcrafted Italian wall covering from Waterworks. † (Brooks 2004).Instead of wasting money on drugs like other people, some people prefer bettering  the finer things like, in this case, bathroom tiles or Italian wall covering. This backs up the statement, to each, their own. Due to everybody wanting different things, everybody’s utopia is different. So even if one were to set everybody in motion, society would just become even more choppy and divided. Where is the utopia now? Although self transcendence; the reconstruction of oneself into a higher being, is a huge part in creating utopia, this society has not progressed further than the selfish values it has already harvested within it’s people. To be able to implement this action into society would create a place where everyone is hap py. If near-utopia was set as a common goal in society, people would come together to achieve this, creating a happy place with a lot of common ground between people. This is true in many instances, for example; war and protest. In Greensboro, North Carolina around 1939, a sit-down strike took place. The blacks protested the segregation of color in buildings. Hundreds of other black Americans came to protest this together. The amalgamation of protesters there show that common goals lead to accumulation of support and eventual achievement. Making utopia a common goal between all will result in near success; achieving something along the lines of common utopia. Reaching utopia is not pragmatic because there is a wide range of interests between humans which expands and ambiguates the concept of utopia, making it harder to reach, and also because ignorance is prevalent throughout society, making it more difficult to solve societal problems and attain true happiness as opposed to proxies of happiness i. e. Soma from Brave New World.A characteristic that Americans possess which may assist on the journey to collective happiness is our niche for working hard. If instead we were to use the idea of having a place where everyone is at peace with their surroundings as a common goal throughout society, motivation would permeate and take control. It is only instinctual to act upon something one feels passionate about. If happiness is what is being offered, then I am certain that this will evoke many people to work side by side to achieve this goal. While working side by side with people passionate about the same goal as one is, one will be happy.Hungry for more happiness, the people would continue to work at the goal, even though it is impossible. This leads to an infinite cycle in which society is constantly bettering itself, creating some type of near-utopia, but no one realizes it. Lying amidst the motivated crowd is utopia, but the minute the crowd loses motivation, the utopia vanishes. So let the idea of utopia tailgate the crowd because after all, the crowd is working towards something greater; societal transcendence, the evolvement of society into a common happy place, not perfection. This is the true utopia.

Sweatshops Workplace Standards and Codes

Sweatshops Workplace Standards and Codes In a review of business ethics with reference to global climate change, the material referring to the issue has been minimal. This is in spite of the topic of global climate change being a key subject in ethics for scientists, policy analysts and politicians, because of its adverse effect on the ecosystem, human and nonhuman populations. Ethical analysis has been focused on distribution of the burden among states, in order to reduce emissions.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Sweatshops Workplace Standards and Codes of Conduct specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More With the large corporations focusing more on design and contracting suppliers in developing countries, it may be seen as an issue of chasing cheap labor and transfer of the emissions to third world countries, where the factories are situated. While this paper will not look at the ethics of business with regard to climate change, it was a necessary perspective, as we observe the working conditions provided by these corporations, to their suppliers (Arnold and Bustos 1). Introduction The globalization of production has resulted in international division of labor, whereby companies prefer to focus on product design and marketing, while the production of the items is contracted to suppliers in developing countries. Companies that contract their items to suppliers in developing countries include Nike and Reebok. Labor and human right activists are opposed to this since they view it as exploiting foreign workers, in their chase for cheap labor. In doing so, these big companies pay the laborers poorly, make use of child labor, ignore human rights and keep their workers from joining labor unions that would help them in addressing the issues of workplace standards. Codes of conduct have been developed by many of these companies, in order to try and meet the concerns raised by the suppliers (Maitland 155). Campaign against international sweatshops Th e main channel through which the issues have been publicized is the television, followed by print media. The media has disclosed information regarding the sweatshops by televising the poor work conditions in the factories. One of the issues raised was by Kernighan in 1996, when he disclosed that the Kathie Lee Gifford’s clothing line was being made by laborers aged between 12 and 15, and that they worked for more than 18 hours a day. The companies that make use of sweatshops are unable to come up with effective defence strategies when sued for their inhumane contracts, and therefore respond by suing for peace. This is strategic so that they can protect their corporate image. They have also taken up codes of conduct on human and labor rights, in their global practises (Maitland 156). The companies adhere to the code of conduct so that they can protect their reputation, by not appearing to be unethical, unfair or conducting illegal operations. It is important to identify the ap propriate labor standards in the international sweatshops, as well as find out the right wages for the workers. This paper looks at the labor conditions of the plant as reported by other researchers with a view to identifying their compliance to the codes of conduct (Maitland 156).Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Home-country standards Most business ethicists and international sweatshops critics argue that home-country standards such as provision of similar wages and labour standards should not be implemented in host-countries as well. The reason for this is that it would eliminate the need for hiring foreign workers if the US earnings were used as bench mark for fairness. The ethics of multinational corporation s cannot be based on wages since if they paid the workers in a manner similar to their home countries, they would interfere with the local labor market, since the wages would not correspond to the local cost of living (Maitland 156). Living wage standard It has been suggested that international corporations should have their minimum payment equivalent to the living wage, which allows the laborers to live in dignity. The payment should allow the workers to provide for themselves and their dependents (Maitland 157). Donaldson’s test This was the opinion of Thomas Donaldson, who believed that the most significant issue regarding the wages of laborers was whether they complied with the international minimum, without considering the home and host wage requirements. One of the shortcomings of his approach was that it left a few matters unattended, including harms and threats that the workers may face, besides physical injuries. The test also incorporates counterfactuals that may pr ovide scapegoats for managers who act unethically (Maitland 157). Classical liberal standards This standard is rejected by most business ethicists since it argues that a labor or wage practice is ethical only if it is chosen by knowledgeable laborers. The right level according to the World Bank is one that balances expenses of the workers with the working conditions and level of risk, as evaluated by informed laborers. The determination of work safety has been observed to be compromised by the high rate of unemployment, which makes the few people who get employment to overlook safety issues. The reliance on market solutions is also affected by the global debt and Islamic fundamentalism. In addition to this, the absence of institutions to protect the workers or provide bargaining power affects the opinions provided by the informed workers (Maitland 157).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Sweatshops Workplace Standards and Codes of Conduct specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Characteristics of international sweatshops Globalization has been viewed as the transfer from regulated economies to unregulated economies, which is basically from domestic to world economies. The large nature of these corporations gives them the power to influence decisions made in host countries, and manoeuvrability, in that they can shift locations with ease. Because of this, and the high rate of unemployment in developing countries, the governments compromise on various issues in order to attract the large corporations. The developing countries compete against each other by decreasing the wages, in order to encourage the corporations to invest in their countries, which leads to poorer working conditions, as the countries are held below the poverty level, and the gap between the rich and the poor widens (Maitland 158). Unconscionable wages Critics demand that workers be paid living wages instead of the slave wages that are in sufficient to support their families. The studies on various sweatshops have indicated wages as low as $35 a week in Mexico, and $1 per day in Indonesia, which are below the minimum physical need set by the government, and are obviously insufficient for the employee to feed and provide for other needs of the family (Maitland 158). Immiserization thesis Robert Reich suggested that nations should follow up on policies that limit the benefits of trade to a few elite corporations who exercise rationality in their endeavours. The activists believe that these factories push the laborers into poverty by lowering their living standards, especially when the countries bid for the lowest working conditions (Maitland 159). Widening gap between rich and poor The globalization of trade by large corporations seeking suppliers in third world countries has resulted in increased inequality within developing countries. It has also led to an increase in the gap between rich and poor. Development is sup posed to reduce the gap between the rich and poor, though it does not apply to international sweatshops. Critics argue that the GNP of some countries may appear to be growing, but the gap between rich and poor continues to widen, due to the exploitation of the vulnerable people, by both local and foreign elite (Maitland 159). Situation presented by sweatshops The international corporations introduce sweatshops because they need cheap labor, they can produce at lower wages at times going below the country’s poverty level, the working unions are suppressed by country regimes resulting in minimal demands and they take advantage of cheap child labor. Such s=is the situation in Indonesia (Maitland 160). Wages and conditions Critics have observed that multinational laborers are paid better than in their local firms. The international labour organization as also acknowledged that the multinational companies comply with standards regarding wages, work conditions and safety. In additi on to this, the ILO says that the standards are better in export processing zones as opposed to other areas.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More The World Bank has also identified that people in the informal sector make about half of what people in the formal sector earn, and that the working conditions in the factories are more insecure and hazardous when compared to the formal sector (Maitland 161). Inequality Critics have argued that international sweatshops have led to increased poverty and inequality, which is not necessarily true. Some laborers have acquired the skills to make more technical and expensive items which have better pay (Maitland 162). Repression International sweatshops have been observed to benefit from repression, though the economic development in those countries reduces the impact. The organizations benefit by the assistance of governments, which repress workers unions, while they pay the labourers more than other people in the local factories earn (Maitland 162). Collusion with repressive regimes Repression in china and Indonesia has increased due to their government’s bid to encourage foreign investments. These countries have declined to execute the minimal labor laws. In addition to this, they break up any strikes and stifle independent unions as well as political opposition. Nike moved their suppliers from Taiwan and Korea because they encouraged workers unions, to china and Thailand where the regime suppressed unions (Maitland 159). Standards in international trade-offs The price for increased wages and better work conditions is reduced foreign investment, since the advantages of cheap labor would no longer apply. Workers in international sweatshops in Indonesia are usually paid about half of what people in the formal sector of developing countries earn, which places them in the top half of income earners in their country. According to the economists, increased wages in the formal sector translate to reduced employment in the same sector, and reduce the income of the informal sector (Maitland 163). Raising the minimum wages for the informal sector has been challenged , since increased income is supposed to result in saving and investment, in order to create new job opportunities. The World Bank also supports that minimum wages are capable of helping poor laborers in industrial countries but not in developing countries. Raising the standards of labour is also likely to contribute negatively to investment and employment in third world countries (Maitland 163). According to a report released by World Bank, increasing safety in the workplace is expensive, and proportional to the safety level desired. The high costs would obviously be imposed on the workers, either by reduced job opportunities or decreased wages. This implies that high standards for working conditions can result in decreased worker welfare. On the other hand, high standards for working conditions would decelerate the expansion of employment opportunities in the formal sector, which would result in harsh working conditions for people in the informal sector (Maitland 164). The policies proposed by critics seem to be more advantageous to the better placed workers, as opposed to those who work in poor conditions with poor pay. This can be seen by the number of unions available for the working people in third world countries, while the informal sector remains unheard. Critics have discussed many issues but neglected the debate as to whether it is ethical for workers to compromise on their working conditions in order to create more job opportunities (Maitland 164). Conclusion Critics have been observed to attack many corporations for chasing cheap labour in developing countries, but remain silent when the increase in wages and improved working conditions result in reduced employment opportunities. Their excuse is that the changes do in work conditions and wages do not affect employment rates, but in the real sense, the changes lead to reduced job opportunities in the formal sector, reduced wages in the informal sector, reduced economic growth due to decreased investm ent, fewer exports and more inequality. As a result, the laborers cannot afford to fight for either higher wages, or better working conditions (Maitland 164). Arnold, Denis G and Keith Bustos. Business Ethics and Globbal Change. Magwitch-a criminal Essay Example

Magwitch Magwitch-a criminal Paper Magwitch-a criminal Paper Dickens uses of short, descriptive sentences help to achieve these visions. Magwitch is a colourful, cunning and manipulative character, yet he loosens up his anger slightly towards Pip, when he learns that he is an orphan. It may show that Magwitch is an orphan too, and so shows slight sympathy towards him. Dickens may also be implying that Magwitch was provoked to turn to crime, as a result of becoming an orphan- fending for his self. This signifies a (very) subtle change in a relationship that was full of fear and intimidation, to one with a form of dependence, and some sympathy attached alongside it too. Pip agrees to follow the commands of Magwitch-a criminal, and therefore despite not really knowing, performing a noble act. In chapter 2, Dickens delves deeper into investigating the life of a typical orphan; in the era. We learn more about the harsh realities of life for an orphan. If you werent killed by the numerous epidemics around, then you were considered lucky. Ironically, the situation is written about quite comically to lessen the impact of the powerful opening chapter. Pip lives with his abrupt, and shrewish sister, Mrs Joe Gargery-who now looks after him, and her husband, Joe Gargery, who is a blacksmith. Pip is regularly the victim of angry beatings delivered by his sister, who has established a reputation by bringing Pip up by hand. Knowing her to have a heavy hand and to be much in the habit of laying it upon her husband as well as upon me, I suppose that Joe Gargery and I were brought up by hand. The channelling of problems faced in childhood evokes feelings of sympathy from the reader towards Pip- Dickens successfully does this to make the reader see that society was unjust, he explores this further through out the story. Mrs Joe isnt afraid to let Pip know that she thinks of his as a burden, and so uses him as a cannonball, she regrets looking after him. If it wasnt for me youd have been to the churchyard long ago, and stayed there. Who brought you up by hand? And why I did it, I should like to knowId never do it again! I know that. Mrs Joe believes that Pip should be grateful to her for what she has done for him. She is also quick to say that she is ashamed of her situation. It is bad enough to be a blacksmiths wife (and him a Gargery), without being your mother. This shows that Mrs Joe feels burdened by her position-looking after Pip, she is continuously working. Pip and Joe are in understanding of each others situations and so try to make the best of their situation. Joe tries to protect Pip, rather than lashing out on him too. When Pip hides some bread for Magwitch, Joe thinks that he has been bolting (swallowing without chewing). Mrs Joe makes both Pip and Joe drink repulsive tar-water (disinfectant mixture-wood tar); the cruel conditions of childhood are again depicted. In Dickens view of childhood, he felt that children have certain needs: guidance in a nurturing home, to be free from emotional and physical abuse, to have a good education, and to be allowed to be happy. Lack of parental love and support; in these circumstances have inclined Pip to long for a better future for himself, thinking it be possible if he can become a gentleman, he tries to pursue this ambition. Firing from the Hulks announces the escape of another convict. At dawn he steals food and a file, and hurries to meet the convict, despite his conscious questioning him-he feels that this is a criminal act, although he still carries it out. Chapter 3 opens to a rimy (frosty), miserable morning, where key events are about to occur. Pips guilty conscience is exposed, he thinks that his surroundings are talking to him, everything seemed to run at me and accusing him of crime. The gates and the dykes and banks came bursting at meA boy with somebody-elses pork pie! Stop himThe Cattle came upon me with like sadnessHolloa young thief! Dickens shows through the narrative, that he knew how children thought, and so the reader is able to enter Pips mind and see the world through the eyes of a child. Pip sees another convict in the dangerous fog and escapes from him, assuming that he is the murderous young man Magwitch mentioned was with him. The first convict-Magwitch is waiting for Pip. He devours the food with animal relish, and works to remove the leg iron with the file. He shows a different side of emotions when Pip comes back to meet him, and gives him food, something clicked in his throat as if he had works like a clock, and was going to strike. The usage of a metaphor tries to convey the fact that his burst of softer emotions is surprising, as he has presented his intense, and angry side, the narrative suggests that his presence is not human like, more like a machine. Alliteration helps to pinpoint this And he smeared his ragged rough sleeve over his eyes. Pips fear of him is mixed with pity, pitying his desolation, and watching him as he gradually settled down. The convict had obviously invented the young man to frighten Pip. Their relationship has shifted at this point-its a landmark. Magwitch doesnt act violently towards Pip (although he when he hears about another convict he gets angry-suggesting a mysterious connection between them), although the element of violence is still mentioned. He shivered all the while so violently and He was already handling mincemeat down his throatmore like a man putting it away somewhere in a violent hurry, than a man eating it. This shows us that Magwitch has indecisive violent qualities. Magwitchs almost unsettled state is highlighted again. His manners are compared to that of dogs. The politeness of Pips sympathetic conversation with the convict is an attempt to normalise an abnormal situation, but also, as recognition of the convict as a fellow human being. He is becoming somewhat comfortable with the situation now. Pip: I was glad you enjoyed it (the food Pip bought for Magwitch). Magwitch even thanks Pip, thus creating a noticeable change in their relationship-it is significant. Pips initial referral to Magwitch as my convict shows that an emotional bond/relationship between them is felt and has formed incomparison to previous fear. Pip leaves Magwitch to work on his leg-iron with the file, whilst he runs back home (for Christmas). In Chapter 4, at the forge an abundant dinner is held. Pip has got a guilty conscious, and is feeling terrified that his theft will be discovered. The tar-water that Pip substituted for the stolen brandy is drunk, and the pork pie cant be found. When Pip finally runs for the door but is met by a soldier bearing a pair of handcuffs. We are faced with the worrying question will Pip be arrested for his act? This end on a note of suspense reminds us that Dickens was writing to please a wide audience. In chapters 5-6, we learn that Joe is asked to repair the broken handcuffs. Everyone is forced to follow the soldiers on the search for the convicts, although Pip is reluctant-and worried about what Magwitch will think. Would he believe that I was both imp and hound in treacherous earnest, and had betrayed him? Pip is clearly feeling anxious and guilty about the situation, he is unsure about what may happen to both himself and Magwitch. The convicts are eventually found. Our curiosity about the convicts is aroused when one of them is called a gentleman-a topic that is at the core of the story is questioned. We see Joes humanity when he recognises Magwitch as a poor miserable fellow-creatur. Joe says We dont know what youve done, but we cant have you starve to death for itCould we Pip? to Magwitch. The reader learns that Pip gains his good morals and humanity from Joe, and his teachings. Dickens tries to bring into view of the audience that many convicts like Magwitch) werent necessarily bad people, you should consider that they may have been driven to commit crimes. Before being rearrested and taken back to the Hulks, Magwitch admits that he has stolen food from the forge, but doesnt reveal that Pip helped him; this public spew of protection shows gratitude and reassurance between the pair. Their relationship is still developing, and there has been a rapid shift since their first encounter the previous day, where a whirlwind of violence, and tension was displayed. Since the morning their relationship and attitude has turned into something more meaningful-loyalty has been conjured up; Proving that Magwitch must have been really touched when he was shown kindness from Pip. Criminals like Magwitch were pushed to the bottom of society. It was rare to see any affection shown towards them, as they were treated so badly. Magwitch shows emotion when kindness is shown to him from Pip and Joe. The something I had noticed before, clicked in the mans throat again, and he turned his back. Magwitchs turn around implies that he doesnt really want to show his softer emotions, this may be because criminals were believed to be hard and their emotions werent taken into consideration, as if they lacked them. Pip decides not to confide in Joe about his own part in the theft either; this signifies the start of a break between them.

Should You Use the Universal College App or the Common App

Should You Use the Universal College App or the Common App SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips For years, the Common Application (CA) was the only widely available application for use at multiple colleges. It was created in 1975, with 15 colleges in its first year. It still dominates the college application world, and today is used by more than 800 colleges and universities. However, back in 2007, the Universal College Application (UCA) was created, and now serves 18 colleges and universities. So what exactly are the differences between the CA and the UCA? Why do colleges use one, both, or neither? And which one should you use? We will explore these questions in this post and help you decide how to apply. CA vs UCA: A Centralized College Application Both the CA and UCAallow you to create a centralized college application- with your demographic information, extracurricular activities, and grades- and then send that application off to various colleges. This saves time since you don't have to fill out a separate application for every single college you apply to. The CA and UCAmostly serve private colleges, though there are exceptions. The reason for this is that most public universities have their own online admissions systems. Many colleges on the CA and UCA have what they call "supplements"- extra questions that their admissions offices use to evaluate candidates. The supplements can include anything from short questions ("describe yourself in five words") to additional essays. If colleges accept both applications, they don’t have a preference for one or the other. In other words, it won’t matter to them which one you use. While it’s far more likely you’ll use the CA simply because it serves so many more colleges, there are still some advantages to the UCA. So how do you decide which application system to use? Benefits of the Universal College Application First, let's take a look at the biggest pros of using the UCA: The Universal College App's interface is faster than the Common App's, and includes an auto-save feature, which can prevent you from losing progress and having to go back and fill something out again. Since the Universal App is newer and doesn’t serve as many applicants or colleges, you can expect to get technical assistance faster if you need it. Whether you run into a technical problem or have a question, you can expect a faster response from the UCA. You can edit your essay after you push the submit button with the UCA. Obviously, this won’t matter if you edit your essay in March, as the admissions officers will have seen it by then, but if you catch a small mistake a few days after submission, you’ll have the chance to change it. You can link to online content you’ve produced, such as a student newspaper or film project. Some schools are on the UCA but not the CA. These are the University of Charleston (WV) and Landmark College(all other UCA schools are also on the CA). Note that bothLandmark College and the University of Charleston will be available on the CAstarting this application cycle(2019-20). Drawbacks to the Universal College Application Now that we've seen the pros of the UCA, let's go over the biggest cons: The main downside to the Universal College Appis that not very many schools use it in comparison to the CA.True- it doesserve some big-name schools like Cornell, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and Princeton. But the rest of the Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, and numerous other colleges aren’t on the UCA. For a complete list of schools, go to the UCA website. In most cases, if a college uses the Universal App, it’s also on the CommonApp, but not vice versa (except for the two exceptions we noted above). So for the majority of students, the Common Appis likely to be the more convenient option since it will give them the most flexibility when applying to college. It’s possible that if you decide to use the UCA but then decide after submitting some applications that you want to apply to a school that only uses the CA, you’ll end up having to fill out the CA anyway. If you start with the CA, it’s much less likely you’ll have to fill out a second application since so few schools are UCA-only. Benefits of the Common Application We've looked at the pros and cons of the UCA, but what about the CA? Here are the three biggest advantages: The biggest draw of the Common Appis that it represents more than 800schools! Because of this fact alone, many students use the CA even if they would prefer theUCA's interface and flexibility. Check out the Common App website to see the full list of schools it serves. Since the CA has been around for a long time, most high school teachers and guidance counselors are familiar with the CA and know how to fill out its various sections (including letters of recommendation and the counselor recommendation sections). With theCommon App account rollover feature, you can actually start your application early and roll the information you've filled out over to the next year's application when it opens on August 1. Drawbacks to the Common Application Just like the UCA, the Common App isn't perfect! Here are its biggest cons: The CA has a slower interface than UCA. The Common App launched a new version in 2014. Some students have found this format a bit confusing. For example, academic honors and extracurriculars are now filled out in subsections that are somewhat hard to find (the honors list is in the "Education" section, and the activities subsection is under "Activities"). These used to be more straightforward lists. It’s harder to retain certain formatting in essays since the "upload"feature is gone with the most recent edition. If you’re picky about how your essay is formatted, this could be a source of annoyance. The Common Appreceives thousands upon thousands of applications. For example, in2017-18, more than 1 million applicants used the CA. However, their staff isn’t that big, so if you have a technical problem, it might take some time to work it out. Definitely aim to submit your applications before their deadlines in case you run into any technical troubles. (And don’t be that student pressing the submit button at the last possible minute!) Unlike the Universal College App, you can’t make edits to the essay after submission. So don’t push "submit" until you are positive your essay is perfect! Colleges That Don’t Accept Eitherthe UCA or CA While the CA and UCA have become huge names in college admissions, there are still plenty of schools that don’t accept either application system. If you are applying to these schools, you might not even have to choose between the UCA and CA. Here are some notable schools that don’t use either the Universal College App or Common App: Georgetown University MIT Rutgers University University of California system (including UC Berkeley and UCLA) University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign University of Texas system (including UT Austin) Texas AM This is just a starter list. As a general rule, public universities tend to have their own systems. And some colleges on the CA and UCA also offer their own online application systems. To check whether a school is on the UCA or CA, simply go to the list of UCA schools and CA schools, and see if the school is on the list (use a ctrl + F to search quickly on the UCA or just use the search function for the CA). If you’re mostly applying to schools that don’t use the UCA or CA, for the few colleges you apply to that do use those applications, you might have a bit more flexibility. For example, say you’re a California resident applying mostly to public in-state schools, but you’re also applying to Harvard, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins as your reach schools. Since all three of those schools are on both the UCA and CA, you would be able to choose between the two applications based on your preferences. However, if your reach schools were Stanford and Yale, you would have to use the Common App, since neither of those schools uses the Universal College App. Bottom Line: Universal College Application vs Common App Given these pros and cons, which application system is the best choice for you- the Universal College Application or the Common Application? Definitely Use the Common Application If †¦ You are applying to schools that don’t accept the Universal College App and/or schools that are Common App only. This will likely be the case for the majority of students. Most or all of the schools you’re applying to require at least one letter of recommendation and essay. Since these features are required on the CA, it will simplify your application process to have them as required, rather than optional, components. Definitely Use the Universal College Application If †¦ You’re only applying to schools that accept the Universal College App (or some schools that take the UCA and some schools that don’t accept either the UCA or the CA) and you prefer the UCA’s interface. Final Tip For any school that you are interested in applying to, look it up on both the CA website and UCA website and note if it’s on the CA, the UCA, both, or neither. Once you narrow down your college application list, you candecide which application system will make it easier to apply to all the schools you’re interested in. What’s Next? Stock trading experience - Essay Example Working in stock market is very complex job;it does not only require money but also high skills and techniques along with the fact that the player must be lucky also. The following essay discusses the experience of stock trading. This activity helps in gaining huge experience about the market fluctuations and also keeps the instinct on the line. The following essay discusses the experience of stock trading. Stock Trading Experience Just few weeks ago, I decided to enter into the stock market and become the professional trader. The motivation and interest was developed to work in the stock market, while I was in my school life because in my school life I was very good at mathematics and statistics and loved to play with numbers. One of the biggest advantages and opportunities were my teachers who supported me a lot to polish my skills and techniques. At one point of time, I was strongly suggested by my statistics teacher to take the advanced computer classes and statistics and mathemat ics tuitions. The advanced lessons and classes also helped to be positive at all times towards trading in the stock market and when I was in college, I finally decided to start trading (Nassar, 1999). In the initial stages and to gain the professional experience, I spent some time with the professionals who were already in the stock market.... tical skills were better than others of same ages, but when it comes to the trading of stock, I found out that my skills and expertise were very restrictive to the theoretical aspects. And in the professional life, there are many big fishes that have more knowledge, experience, expertise and skills than me. But I tried my best to understand all the concepts, techniques, approaches and expertise to ensure that in the future these elements will help me to become the successful stock trader and generate the positive outcomes and results. After spending six months as a trainee stock trader, I then decided to move on and become the individual in the stock trading market. I went to my bank and visited an assistant to lend ?100,000. After few days, the requested amount was lent to me by my bank. After couple of days, doing my homework and prepare the entire plan, I approached the stock market to make efficient investments. But sooner I realized that the situation in the stock market is not as I was initially thinking and expecting. Before deciding and availing the investment opportunity, there were many aspects that were found to be very critical and difficult. But after long considerations and detailed homework, I took a step and made an investment of ?75,000 and bought the shares of the company whose stock prices were constantly going up. Sooner I bought the shares, the very next day, the prices of the stocks starting decreasing. As I entered into the market as a regular investor therefore I did not had the time to wait for the prices to go up again. But I waited for 3 days and found out that the prices were constantly going down because the current financial position of the company was not strong. On the day 4th I had no other option but to sell the stock at lower prices

Model answer for Business Environement and Economics Essay

Model answer for Business Environement and Economics - Essay Example Thus, there is a rise in the aggregate demand for exports from the nation. On the contrary, the demand for imports also falls due to a higher value of foreign currencies. However, there are adverse implications of a falling exchange rate value as well. It discourages overseas investors from pouring their resources in a nation whose domestic currency bears a poorer value than that of the home country. This will imply a fall in the aggregate amount of investments and thus a negative influence on the gross income of the concerned nation. Nevertheless, this is compensated through a rise in export balances as well, so that the impact on the aggregate income of the nation is almost negligible. Moreover, a gradual rise in the income level establishes the rate of exchange at the previous level and thus, wins back the faith of the overseas investors once again, so that the nation is shoved to a path of economic growth and the national business houses experience prosperity once again. Speaking in terms of comparative advantage principals, suppose there are two nations, A and B, with each of them endowed with resources capable of producing two goods, X and Y. according to the principal, if A can produce X at cheaper expenses than B, then, A must concentrate on producing X only, while B should produce Y. The amounts of X and Y that each of them need would be traded between them so as to produce a mutually beneficial situation through increased income levels. The situation could be encompassed through the inequation, PXA/ PYA < PXB/ PYB, i.e., PXA/ PXB < PYA/ PYB. If currency of A devalues, it implies that both PXA and PYA should fall, compared to those in B, which need not maintain the inequations. In fact, it might be revealed that the relative prices of both X and Y is lower in A than in B due to cheaper production costs. Hence, demand for Y from B would shift to A; A now supplies both X and Y, which are imported by B. B in turn needs to open up other income

The History on my Japanese Dish Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The History on my Japanese Dish - Research Paper Example uch as French fries or French rolls, bacons and hamburgers as uniquely American or English, pizza, spaghetti or pepperoni cheese as Italian and so it is with the Japanese, with their food. History of chopsticks – Asian culinary culture and history is closely intertwined with the development and spread of chopsticks. These so-called sticks are actually two pieces that are about 9-10 inches in length and rectangular in shape, used to pick up small pieces of food. These first originated in China some 5,000 years ago and most probably was invented by the people who first used branch twigs to pick out hot food from a pot, since they cannot wait any longer for cooked food to cool down a bit (must have been really hungry already!). Using the chopsticks requires a degree of manual dexterity, as food could easily fall off or slide down in the process of picking it up and putting it into the mouth. Eating using chopsticks means to eat from a bowl because it cannot possibly be used to handle soups, so the bowl makes it easier to just gulp down the soup or any liquid while using the chopsticks to scrape for solid tidbits. Japanese chopsticks – the Japanese are an enterprising and innovative people. They are quick learners too, and adopted the chopsticks from the Chinese, like the Koreans and the other Asian nations or cultures such as the Vietnamese and Malaysians of Chinese descent. In Japan, their chopsticks are round in shape instead of rectangular, and the lower ends are now pointed or tapered instead of being flat or blunt. Chopsticks as used in Japan are associated in their religious ceremonies and the so-called fine art of dining, together with the tea ceremony. Eating in Japan is not merely for the sake of eating to assuage hunger pangs but rather a very elaborate affair, designed to prolong the gustatory delight of savoring delicious food. Chinese chopsticks were like tweezers, as they were joined at the top but this reduces flexibility as it is being used.

People who will embrace your transformation in to a college educated person - Article Example This was something they look upon as their gift to me without any monetary equivalent. The support that they provide is not only financial but also moral and spiritual in value. As I journey into the midst of what’s to come, knowing that they will always be there as I strive for success is more than enough to consistently boost my confidence. Nevertheless, I am aware that there are people who will want to drag me down. Some in our immediate family think that college education is not necessary to thrive in life. They maintain that it is in one’s skills and sheer hard work that one gets a good job. Even more understandable is the consequent truth that a diploma costs a lot and this will translate to a huge dent in our financial stability. I recognize that there is a necessity for me to work harder in achieving my goals. Having a clearer path in what I want in life would help in overcoming these apprehensions. College education will allow me not only to have a mere piece of paper but to have life experiences that will lead me to realize where I am heading to in the

The implications of different cultural views of space for business and Essay

The implications of different cultural views of space for business and management practice in culturally diverse context - Essay Example The competition is getting tougher with the inclusion of the Asian Economies in the global market where labour is very cheap and productive e.g. in China. As one of the most beneficial motivation technique employee empowerment can be effectively used to continue to embrace the changing trends of business. Yet my paper also suggests that the management will have to work just as hard as employees to ensure that the process is undertaken effectively in order to achieve the desired results do. This research will be an important contribution to the understanding of factors, which play an important role in the effective undertaking of the process. In the last decade, the belief has grown amongst organisational theorists (Handy, 1985, 1989; Kanter, 1983, Pascale, 1990 and others) that in order to be successful in increasingly turbulent markets, organisations need to be able to assimilate – or better, instigate – dramatic shifts in their industries. Cultural factors are also one of the impacting force, which affects the values placed on the Motivation. The role of the ‘opportunity factors’ offered by the social and economic context as an important contributing factor with cultural influences (CEEDR, 2000). The influence of the culture was been first stressed at the beginning of the century. Protestants have encouraged a culture which stresses on achievement motivation, individualism, rationality, legitimating of entrepreneurial vocations, asceticism and self-reliance. Thus ethic is the fundamental element of the spirit of modern capitalism (Weber, 1976). Culture is like a collective programming of the mind that distinguishes the members of one category of people to other that means a culture which is shaped by the individual social environment but not by there genes. Culture differences are the outcomes of national, ethnic, regional, religious,

Learning basics about religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Learning basics about religion - Essay Example Critically, the research documents about the Jewish practice of particularism and universalism by identifying and exhorting various fundamentals from the historical texts despite their geographical distribution across the globe (Donin, 1991). The study criticizes the book written to establish the cornerstones of Judaism to relate the author’s successful evaluation of the main subject of discussion. The book identifies that there exists many groups of Jews born to the eleven tribes of Israel other than Judah. The careful identification of these groups of Jews emphasizes on the existence of skeptical Jews in the religion. Further, the author succeeds in the identification of the ideal population of Jews as the descendants of Judah. It is vital to identify the group as the devout Jews. Arguably, the identification of the religion’s profession to particular pinnacles in their worshipping and social practices asserts that the group embraces covenant relationship with God. Secondly, the chapter instills knowledge that Jews abide and honor the â€Å"Ten Commandments† that were given to Moses during their Exodus from Egypt. The Hebrew Bible identifies monotheism as meant to represent the religion’s belief in the God of Abraham, Moses, and Elijah. The researcher establishes an overall history of the Jewish community across the world as they critically evaluate the ideological history of the religion (Donin, 1991). In support of the author, it is evident that the religion devotes its religious beliefs to the four cornerstones namely; the covenant between God and their father, Abraham, the implemented notions of monotheism, the dedication to honor the â€Å"Ten Commandments†, and Israel (the Promised Land). Despite the political and religious changes that have threatened the Jewish community from the past, the author identifies that the group remains strong and devoted to its religious foundations. For example, chronological

Psychology and Social Situations Essay Example for Free

Psychology and Social Situations Essay Providing incentive for individuals to establish a carpool system or take the bus instead will motivate them to resort to these resolutions although it has been unsuccessful. The government and other organizations that campaign against overdependence on private vehicles which contribute to heavy traffic should not expect that simply asking the people to share rides and take buses in order to lessen the number of vehicles on the road will work. People should be given incentives in adhering to the requests of concerned organizations, such as free fare or transportation allowances for the people. Organizations and establishments concentrated on a specific location should grant employees with free rides on shuttles that will take them to and from work everyday. This allows individuals to understand that sharing rides and taking the buses will save them the fare and lessen inconveniences caused by heavy traffic. 2. From this particular situation, we may deduce the disparity of knowledge and competencies displayed by children. Individual differences also cause differences on the rate of performance within the classroom, such that there are those that excel and those who fail depending on the cognitive faculties. Assignments are provided by teachers not only to reinforce learning and introduce the succeeding lesson, but also to give children the chance to catch up and experience success through home-based activities that allow them to learn at their own pace. Children who are identified to be the lowest-achieving in class think about their chance of pulling up their grades by spending more time on their assignments and excelling through them. This is the same reason why excellent performers do not spend more time on their homework, because they already have experienced success within the classroom setting. 3. Providing rewards is a good way of motivating children and reinforcing learning. There are various forms of rewards that teachers will be able to use including tangible rewards. Although concrete objects are considered as rewards, they should be given in moderation. Teachers should look for other forms of rewards such as praises and commendations, exemptions from school work or activities, and other types of non-tangible rewards. The danger of utilizing concrete objects as rewards is that children will not be able to learn the value of maintaining desirable learning behavior in class. Every action that they take will depend on the presence of a tangible reward at all times. In this case, desirable learning behaviors are not reinforced and sustained throughout the learning process, and children will only choose to perform well and exhibit good behavior when they see that there will be tangible rewards made available for them after doing so. To address this situation, academic institutions should consider setting standards and guidelines on how teachers should provide rewards, stressing the need to lessen the use of concrete objects but rather utilizing non-tangible rewards that create emphasis on inherent changes and display on desirable learning behavior and excellent learning performances. B. Psychological Disorders 1. The classification of abnormal behavior stems from the need to appropriately determine the medical and professional methods and strategies that will be implemented in order to address problems associated with the variety of abnormal behavior. The classification system of abnormal behavior, particularly the DSM-IV established by the American Psychiatric Association or APA, is utilized in order to provide a clear illustration or image of the kind or type of behavior exhibited by an individual. The DSM-IV utilizes five axes that are utilized to categorize behavior, solidifying them into a profile that provides information on the dimensions of particular behaviors. Utilizing classification systems, such as DSM-IV, although convenient also has flaws or disadvantages, intensifying the difficulty of assessing and classifying behavior. For instance, since the DSM-IV utilizes five axes in categorizing behavior, it becomes a limited means of understanding the dynamics of behavior. Classifying behavior into five categories does not really border on reliability and validity since behavior will not always meet all the criteria of each category. 2. When one is diagnosed with psychological or mental disorders, this means that there is something nonstandard and uncharacteristic about an individual’s way of thinking and behavior. Having a disorder mean that an individual’s life, particularly his functioning, is influenced by its effects building problems and difficulties along the way. The diagnosis will point to possible causes, whether the disorder is caused by biological factors, environmental factors, and such, which affects one’s ability to work efficiently, socialize with other people or become integrated into society under normal circumstances, etc. After being diagnosed with a psychological or mental disorder, it will also mean that an individual will need to seek professional help in order to determine the root of the problem and disorder and identify possible solutions in order to resolve them. 3. Perhaps it is better to be wrongly diagnosed as having a mental disorder even if one actually does not than the other way around because in the process, the individual will still be able to disprove the diagnosis while medical professionals will have enough time to discover the wrongfulness of their diagnosis. One will not lose anything by being misdiagnosed as psychologically or mentally incapacitated, perhaps just time and effort in proving the misdiagnosis of medical professionals. On the other hand, if one is wrongly diagnosed as not having a mental disorder, he will miss the chance of being provided with professional help and assistance as to how he will be able to conquer the problems brought about by his psychological or mental disorder. After being diagnosed without mental disorders even if in fact, one is psychologically or mentally changed, it will not be treated properly fuelling the possibility of one’s illness or disorder getting worse, while at the same time, intensifying the effects that it might bring towards one life. Missing out on the chance of being treated will neglect â€Å"damage control† allowing the illness or disorder to intensify possibly leading to a state wherein medical professionals will not be able to provide and recommend treatment appropriately.

For the posting rate, it is RM8 flat no matter how many bags you purchase. Only applicable for residents in West Malaysia. Financial Report Targeted Sales (units) Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 6 Week 7 Week 9 Week 10 Week 12 Week 1 Week 2: There are no sales for this period because of the preparation for business plan. This is when we discuss, plan and decide on what to sell and which supplier to get from for our online business. Week 3 Week 6: Within this period, we start to create our blog and Facebook to advertise and start to promote to our friends. We got not much response from customers because this business is still new to them. While promoting our products, the bags that we order directly from the supplier in Taiwan has finally arrived at the end of Week 6. Week 7 Week 9: After few weeks of promoting our products through blog and Facebook, our online business finally start to have some feedback from our customers. Therefore, we target to sell about 5 bags for the beginning and from what we had targeted, we actually manage to reach our target sales within this period of time. Week 10 Week 12: From the response that we get from our customers, we target to sell around 10 bags in these 3 weeks. Our online business is quite successful because we had achieved our target sales again. Although the profit is not much but we hope that our sales will slowly increase from time to time. Below is the income statement of Accessorized e-commerce business: Income Statement For the Three Months Ending August 31, 2010 RM Net sales 795.00 Less: Cost of goods sold 666.80 Gross profit 128.20 Expenses Postage 24.00 Net profit 104.20 MARKETING PLAN Market analysis Target market Our target market will be female. Nowadays, not only teenagers move towards fashion but also middle-age female. Female teenagers are the most important target market. Throughout the trendy world, female teenagers are getting trendy and very particular about fashion. We are taking this opportunity to target female market as selling the most fashion bags. By selling best possible price, we believe that they will be affordable to purchase our products and we have faith in attracting them towards our fashion bags. Besides that, we will target middle-age women as one of the popular markets too. As adults, they are mostly having a fixed income so that they are willing to spent more money in order to purchase their lovely and interested products. Positioning We will set up in customers mind to show that our online business of selling bags is something that brings fashionable to them. Nowadays, female love to buy many types of bags in order to match with their dressing according to occasion. To make our business more attractive, a lot of display photo are post in the blog so that customers can have moe clearer picture about our fashion bags. To do this, customers should well know about our bags each time they recall the word of fashion. Pricing strategy Online business is something that brings convenience to customers and not something trouble. By starting up online business, we able to eliminate many cost. In order to making profits, we should develop few types of pricing strategy so that a best possible price can be achieved. First of all, we develop product line pricing. Product pricing is types of technique to set the price steps between various types of bags in a product line with a different price. Throughout our blog, we have categorized several of bags into different range of price to allow customers freely choose their favourite bags. Another one is psychological pricing. We fix our bags to price below RM50 so that customers are affordable to purchase. Based on psychological approach, we price each bag into RM29.90, RM39.90, RM49.90 rather than a round figure of RM30, RM40, and RM50. This is a marketing strategy to influence customers mind that the products are cheaper than round figure. Customers are more likely to purchas e our products due to this attractive strategy. Promotion plan Promotion plays an important role in business. A well promotion plan should be develop in order to attract huge customers to buy our products. In promotion plan, we use direct marketing. Subscribe mails are one the way to promote our business which giving sufficient information about all the description related our products and delivery and payments methods so that customers can know more about our business hence they can promote their friends either word-of-mouth or through online. By mailing to one customer, it can be possibly indirectly spread the news to others. In addition, we will come out with lucky draw section through the blog. For those customersm are selected, they have chance to get a free gift. Next, we use online media to develop an advertisement at Facebook, twitter or e-mail in order to create awareness about our blog. Facebook is kind of very popular media that used by everyone no matter what country you are. So we taking this opportunity to create a group named Accessorized and place a lot of display photo in Facebook. Not only that, we will take real photo with the bags to show that the reality of the bags. Customers can have a clearer picture about the quality and design of the bags. If customers have any inquires, we able to communicate diherectly with customers and reply them from time to time. Besides that, delivery and payment method, term condition are stated clearly and details hence customers will be convenience when they feel interested and can making order directly from us. This may pass an effective message and information to create awareness about out blog and the related products for customers understanding. Last but not least, sales promotion is an effective strategy that affects customers purchasing decision. The promotion include that we create member special benefit which purchase one bag can automatically become a lifetime member. Members are entitled 5% discount on every purchase of bags due to limited time to period. This is a sales promotion to attract more customers delight and satisfaction. And also, customers who purchase 2 bags or more simultaneously will entitled free postage. By implementing sales promotion, customer attraction can be achieved towards our fashion bags. Distribution plan There are two types of delivery method which available to customers. First method is Cash on delivery (COD). Customers can make cash payment directly when they are nearby to us. The areas are only available in MMU Melaka. For instance, as we are MMU student, students who study in MMU purchase our products are able to pay cash payment and can get the products directly. Another way is postage where our products are in delivery services by using postage. Customers may charge postage fees when they purchase our products. We are using pos laju to deliver our bags. To remind that our business is within Malaysia only, so there will be two different prices in West and East Malaysia. For West Malaysia, it will charge RM8 flat whereas East Malaysia is RM12. No matter how many bags customers purchase, the charge are the same. Demand forecast To determining the forecast regarding to quantity of a product that customer will purchase, we focus more on female. Females love to shop and they are probable to buy our products. In addition, they treat bags as a fashion and they are most likely to buy many types of bags in order to suit with attire according to occasion. Thus, we can forecast that females are our target more and they will demand more. We will be doing a survey regarding the popularity of products to prove that our forecast is reliable and to estimate the quantity of our products that customers will purchase. Estimated people who involved with this survey will be approximately 50 people. Questionnaire This survey will only perform to 50 female: Do you like our bags? YES NO Have you ever purchased any products through online shopping before? (state what products) ____________________ Which price range appear to be affordable to you? RM20-30 RM30-40 RM40-50 RM50 and above OTHERS_________________ Do you think our bags are fashionable/up to the current trend? YES NO Which type of bags will you prefer as stated below? Sling bag Handbag Wallet/Purse COMPETITOR ANALYSIS Example of competitor SWOT ANALYSIS Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats Internal External Positive Negative Our strengths (S) are to provide some tips for the buyers to differentiate between the authentic and fake products. We are definitely selling authentic products where the bags have their own brand sign in it. Customers are confident to buy our products with a full trust. We also provide some tips and tricks to match bags with the attire of the day by our models. In addition, customers are able to search for all the detailed information about our products, order and delivery service and payment method throughout our attractive blog. Feedback and QA from our customers are highly encouraged so that we can to communicate and solve problems faced by customers. Our main weaknesses (W) is that customers cannot try the bags on their own to identify whether the bags really suit their preferences or not. This is because most of our stocks are from Taiwan, it is not like any other physical shop whereby customers can look at the quality, examine the quality of the bag and also try the bag on themselves before buying the bags. Next, we will be discussing on opportunities (O). In the trendy world, teenagers like to match their attire and also, our bag designs are trendy and fashionable. Thus, we have the opportunity to attract female to purchase our bags. They see bags as kind of fashion and they will feel interested towards our fashionable bags. Our main threat is that there are already have many bag sellers selling in the online market. An example of online competitors that selling bags are: www.baobaopifa.com. baobaopifa.jpg From the website, customers are allow to return the bags if they found any faults in the bags. This appear to be a benefit to customers but we are unable to do so. Thus, we must offer reasonable price and make attractive promotion to compete with those competitors in order to maximize our sales. And also, some of the customers prefer to purchase the bags at physical shop because they feel that it will bring more guarantees. For instance, Ecco shop is one of the brand selling various types of bags in a real shop. It is one of our competitors because Ecco shop does not only sell bags but they have also clothes and wallet. Risk Assessment We understand that every single business does carry risk. It is just different by the rate of risk that the business carry. Although there are many interruption on business that caused us to bear a huge risk, but we decided to accept it as a challenge towards the success. First of all, doubt of product quality will always be the main concern how people will think about when they do online shopping. Customer cannot touch, feel, see, and try on the product before they purchase. Hence, they will feel insecure, especially those who are having their very first transaction with the seller. We tried to overcome this problem by snapping real photos of the bags by our models. By looking at real photos, customer can have a clearer picture on the size and quality of the product. Besides, we also have this so called Chat Box and testimonial page that will allow customers to leave their comments if they have any satisfied or unsatisfied comments to voice out. Through the real feedbacks from custo mers, others will have more confidence on what we are selling on. Next interruption is that we are facing is selling price of our competitors. In fact, there are many seller that are selling exactly the same things as what we have. Sometime they are selling at a much lower price than us simply because they want to clear stock. In other words, they might be selling at a loss. We cannot follow this as we need to earn some profits to retain our ongoing business. So, how do we compete? What we can do is just to promise our customers on our products quality. We make sure that the price theyve paid definitely worth the quality of the bags we provide to them. The next interruption will be our products are less attractive to certain category of buyers. At the beginning stage of our business, we are unable to sell as much as other retailers did. Hence, we do not have so much capital to increase our stocks to satisfy our customers who come in different tastes. To overcome this problem, we fou nd a supplier that enable us to became an agent/middleman whereby we do not have to pay a single cent of capital. Although the profit was not that high but it is still able to sustain our business. Furthermore, we cannot serve those customers who prefer branded bags such as LV, and Gucci as our product status are not set as luxury line but just an ordinary product, hence this definitely caused us to lose certain amount of customer who prefer branded bags. Problem that we face during resources requirement process might also cost us a lot. First of all, the case run out stock is the most common problem among all. With the reason we are selling on first come first serve basis and each bag only limited to one unit, once the bag has been purchased, we are unable to satisfy another customer who shows the same interest. Besides, it might happen where products from suppliers do not match with what we have expected earlier on. Because this is not a face-to-face transaction, communication pro blem might happen during the ordering process. Hence, we have to seriously tell supplier what we exactly want and ensure that they provide the latest design for us in order to fit our customers taste. Blog blog1.jpg This is basically the interface of our blog. The main reason why we chose this template is because of the girlish colors, which consists of pink and red combination. And also the huge image that a girl carries a bag, totally suits to represent our blogs business. Below we are going to explain our blog in details : These are pages which consists of Home, Contact Us, Order Form, Testimonials and also Terms and Conditions. Customers can click on the button to access to the pages they want. This is a .GIF file which we will update from time to time.
